  Abstract:
We show the old result of Randjbar-Salam-Strathdee that the fluctuations of the gauge fields in a generic monopole background of a non-Abelian gauge theory does contain tachyonic modes, can directly be generaliz to the cases with gravity. That is, the charged (colored) blackholes of non-Abelian gauge theories are generically unstable. We discuss the relevance of this instabilities to several places in string theory including various string compactifications, gauged supergravities, and the attractor mechanism. For the latter we show that the fluctuations of the non-Abelian gauge fields in the AdS2×S2 geometry obtained as the near horizon limit of the extremal colored blackholes contain tachyonic modes. This would invalidate usage of the attractor mechanism and the entropy function method, shown to work for the extremal Abelain charged blackholes, for the extremal non-Abelian colored blackholes.
