Abstract

The amoeba of an algebraic curve is a certain projected image of the curve in real space. The terminology was introduced by Gelfand et al. in 1994, and since then these geometric objects have turned up in various mathematical contexts, including real algebraic geometry, combinatorics, statistical mechanics, and complex analysis. A particularly interesting connection is the one between amoebas and the new active field of tropical geometry. This talk is aimed at a general mathematical audience and it will give an introduction to both amoebas and tropical geometry
