Abstract

In this talk, we will discuss the problem of counting simple closed geodesic curves on hyperbolic surfaces. We describe a combinatorial approach for generating simple closed curves using "train tracks" - certain graphs embedded on the surface. Using Fenchel-Nielson theory, we then sketch the relationship between this problem and the geometry of moduli space of Riemann surfaces.
