A New Notion of Rank for Unitary Representations of Semisimple Groups

Abstract

I will describe Howe's method of rank for studying the singular part of the unitary dual of a semisimple Lie group of classical type, its connection with the Theta correspondence, and recent progress on how to generalize it (in a unified way) to all semisimple groups, using Kirillov's orbital theory. If time allows, I will explain some applications to the study of small representations of exceptional groups.
