Hexagonal array of Cu@CuO core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) on the a-C:H thin film were prepared by co-deposition of RF-Sputtering and RF-PECVD. The trace of Hexagonal NPs supperlattice was recognized by AFM image and XRD result. Based on Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) of these core-shells NPs, the prepared array detected CO gas flow at the level of one Liter per hour at room temperature. XPS results indicated that the surface of Cu@CuO core-shell NPs does not chemically react with CO molecule. This feature allows sensor chip to be regenerated. The physical absorption of CO gas on the surface of Cu@CuO core-shell NPs increases the LSPR absorbance and causes red-shift of LSPR peak. These experimental results are in agreement with Mie theory studying by assuming that, the CO absorption on the core-shell increases dielectric coefficient of shell. Our prepared Cu@CuO core-shell array shows an average shift of 10-2 nm per molecule absorption which can lead to detection of single CO molecule. It was concluded that LSPR is more sensitive analyses than XPS for detection of physical absorption of molecule gas on the NPs.
