Abstract

The lecture introduces the distance concept in graphs and some distance?related graph invariants. Emphasis will be given on the so-called Wiener index, the sum of distances between all pairs of vertices of a graph. The examination of this graph invariant started 50 years ago, but is still an attractive topic of research. This index is of considerable importance in chemistry. In the lecture some classical and some novel results on the Wiener index are presented and its chemical applications briefly outlined. Unsolved problems are pointed out.
