Optical Tweezers: Harnessing Light for Manipulation and Exploration of the Microscopic World
Dr. Faegheh Hajizadeh

Date : Wednesday , November 15, 2023
           14:00 - 15:00

Description
Until a few decades ago, the manipulation of biological cells and conducting physical investigations at microscopic scales using light seemed like an unattainable notion. However, following the invention of lasers, Arthur Ashkin successfully revolutionized the field by successfully utilizing light to manipulate and trap tiny particles, giving birth to optical tweezers. By precisely focusing a laser beam, optical tweezers enable the trapping of particles through the transfer of light's momentum. Today, optical tweezers equipped with exceptional capabilities to measure pico- and femto-newton forces have become an immensely powerful tool for studying cell membranes, biological macromolecules, and various other applications. In this talk we are going to talk about Brownian fluctuations of an optically rotated nanorod, and the application of optical tweezers in studying the softwall membrane, and the stiffness of the living cells.
