11:00 - 12:00 Weekly Webinar Polynomial-Time Algorithms for Colonel Blotto School BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES In this talk I would like to talk about the Colonel Blotto game. In the classical discrete Colonel Blotto game -introduced by Borel in 1921- two colonels simultaneously distribute their troops across multiple battlefields. The winner of each battlefield is determined by a winner-take-all rule, independently of other battlefields. In the original formulation, each colonel's goal is to win as many battlefields as possible. The Blotto game and its extensions have been used in a wide range of applications from political campaign -exemplified by the U.S presidential election- to marketing campaign, from (innovative) technology competition to sport ... 18:00 - 20:00 Commutative Algebra Webinar Axial Constants of Homogeneous Ideals School MATHEMATICS In computational algebra initial ideals and particularly generic initial ideals are monomial ideals used for estimating a host of algebraic and homological properties of graded ideals. In this talk we employ generic initial ideals to introduce new invariants which measure the complexity of homogeneous ideals. These invariants are termed axial constants because they represent the points in which the set of exponents of monomials in the generic initial ideal intersects the coordinate axes. They simultaneously generalize the initial degree and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. We give homological and ideal-theoretic interpretations for t ... |
