Abstract:

In this non-technical talk we use historical notes to discuss events such as epidemics that have had profound impact on human societies and social relations.

We compare the main characteristics of these events with other social phenomena such as Addictions or Trading in an Efficient Market. Finally we discuss how mathematics can help us develop a better understanding of these phenomena and use the insight to make more measured decisions.

The talk emphasizes the general approach to these problems and does not focus to technicalities.
