Description
Abstract:
The endocannabinoid system consists of endogenous lipid ligands or eCBs, cannabinoid receptors, and synthetic and metabolizing enzymes. It is well-known that this system in the central nervous system is involved in mediating cognitive functions such as learning and memory processes. eCBs release from post-synaptic neurons and act as retrograde synaptic messengers to inhibit the release of neurotransmitters. Therefore, there is a functional interaction between this system and various neurotransmitter systems at both cellular and neuronal network levels. Endocannabinoids via cannabinoid CB1 and/or CB2 receptors which are among the most abundant G-protein-coupled receptors affect synaptic plasticity and also learning and memory processes. It should be considered that cannabinoid CB1 receptors are expressed in the limbic system especially in the dorsal hippocampus. This presentation will discuss how the hippocampal and amygdala cannabinoid CB1 receptors via modulating neurotransmitter systems affect memory formation and also cognitive functions. I will also attempt to present my conclusions in involving molecular cascades in cannabinoid-induced state-dependent learning.
